I want to know something

Will someone explain to me why all the effort to spread Firefox? I don't get it. Internet Explorer is a good browser even though Firefox is better, but it's not useless. And it's way ahead in market share, do we think we're going to topple the giant? IE is free, so that's not the angle. There's money in this for Mozilla somewhere, I know it. But why so much effort to kill the giant when it works? Is it just hate for Microsoft? Not much of a motive. Firefox is my fave, but it just won't do some things. I check out some sites, and Firefox just won't display them right. So Firefox is not better in ALL areas, is it.

Money rules the world but

Money rules the world but theres a difference between greedy capitalists p i g' s and Mozilla

1) Microsoft exploits and makes money out of products not only because they sell them to you they force you to use IE for instance to access certain parts of their networks. Is that fair? no!!!

2) Microsoft offer the IE for free but charge you for it inderctly do they allow the community to improve and customize MS products? NO!!!

3) Mozilla is a non for profit foundation Im not sure when you typed what you typed that you even realize what that means.

4) I will help promote and subscribe to opensource ideals againgst traditional discriminatory and fascist ideals that only after your money.

5)do I need to go on???

mozilla is a non profit org.

Microsoft has millions of dollars to advertise, but Mozilla only gets money from people who buy t-shirts, mouse pads, etc. which is why Mozilla only pays us in t-shirts. but IE is incredibly expensive on a cellular phones.

Why are we doing this?

Why are we doing this? firefox has this and that feature...but the bottom line is this:

We do not want an internet that is locked up and if Microsoft had its way, you could only use Windows and IE in order to use the web. There would be a monopoly over the entire computing world.

IE IS FREE. You can download

IE IS FREE. You can download it for a windows OS at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/worldwide.mspx
You DO not pay anything, either through your IP Service (which does not exist) or any other way!
Firefox is better, but IE is totally free too. You can even download the Beta of IE 8 at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/ie8/default.mspx

Lol

Why Firefox is better? Because is safier, faster, because it follows css standard and html standard, because it has transparent code, because its totally gratis and constantly updated, etc.. etc... etc...

I understand that

.

I understand that

But I never said that it's not better. I said that I like it and use it myself most of the time. Just had other questions is all.

Sorry guy, i melted two

Sorry guy, i melted two concepts in one. We have to spread firefox because is better, faster, safier, etc...
Microsoft has got millions $ to do adv, to spread IE. Open source projects have only their supporters, in this case "us".

PS

Da, Komrad, I understand. I spread the fox. Forced to use IE 6 (SIX!!!) at work, and sneak in Portable Firefox on CD so they don't see it as fast because they watch the USB ports more. I talk about it, show a few trusted friends. I say to them that they should get it and why. Like has been said, people use IE because it's there and came with the computer. Those of us that know better like to show them the error of their ways. Gently.

PS

dang duplicates

Lol

I Want To Know Something

Why spread Firefox? A valid question, and the answers given thus far are pretty valid. I do webdesign as a hobby, and IE is a big headache as far as CSS is concerned.

In my opinion, Firefox has set itself as THE alternative, and a damn good one too. Where I come from, many do not even know what a browser is, and IE is simply the icon on the desktop to click when one wishes to surf the internet.

The spread Firefox project has been educational to users all over the world, and people now know that they have a choice!

Viva Firefox!

Sites will generally only

Sites will generally only "break" in Firefox where a developer has written non-standards-based code which DOES work in IE because it renders the incorrect code "correctly"!

Most of the developers I know prefer Firefox and dread IE. The reasons are many and a search on the internet will fill you in on the multitude of opinions in this regard.

One compelling reason to use Firefox": Firebug! I am currently involved in the final stages of a project, and we are spending a huge number of hours writing additional code so that our beautiful, standards-based, semantic, accessible HTML / CSS will also render in IE... and we are constantly aware that there is no decent IE tool available for the job!

Now something else

Sonickydon posted a reply to my question. I came here to get some clarification, and it's gone. Now what?

Just ask what you want

I had some kind of network problem and my reply was posted twice, perhaps it was removed by mistake along with the duplicate

Well, good questions though they have been answered a lot of times in
the past.
Let's see now, At first, Why spread Firefox? because it's simply
better! IE is not useless, you can use it to get updates from microsoft
but that's it pretty much. Apart from that, it's dangerous for people
with no advanced knowledge on computers since they wont be able to
protect their machines and data from all the security holes it has. IE
is free? since when? it's a windows component, didn't you payed for
windows? you can only get free updates but that doesn't mean it's free.
And sooner or later you'll have to upgrade your windows to get IE's new
version, so that means more money.
Let me put it simple, IE is a browser of the previous decade, Firefox
is a modern browser, it's like comparing a 20 year old car with a brand
new sport car. Sure, they might take you both to your destination but
the safety and comfort can not be compared.
When IE came to life it was nothing compared to the browsers of the
time. But guess what? it was modern for it's time and that's the main
reason that it got it's market share ( well that and the fact that it
comes pre-installed with the operating system that 90+% pc's use) You
think that we can't overtop that? we have the product, we just have to
advertise it. Check the xiti report on that:
http://www.xitimonitor.com/fr-fr/barometre-des-navigateurs/firefox-mars-...
[1]
(It's in French but you can see the images and the charts)
Isn't that good enough for a start? with a little more effort we can
double those numbers.
Yes, there's money in this for mozilla, the foundation gets money from
Google ads because it has Google by default in the searchbar, is that
bad? Mozilla also gets donations from various people like you and me
but the main income comes from Google.
Why so much effort to kill the giant when it works? Because it doesn't
work as we'd like it to work, and no,it's not just hate for microsoft,
it's hate for the numerous hours web developers lost while trying to
hack their perfectly written code in order to make it work for bucky
IE, it's hate for leaving security holes unpatched for months though
they were well known, it's excitement to promote a product that
thousands of people around the globe have made (Firefox is an open
source product and everybody can contribute one way or another, in
other words, it's not just the program we use, it's actually OUR
product - and no, you don't have to be a C++ guru to contribute)
The reason that Firefox can not display right some sites is that those
sites are using non-standard code in their html because microsoft did
never respected the W3C standards. HTML has rules like every other
language It's just like my post, i'm not an english speaking person so
i guess my post will be full of typos and grammar mistakes. If i fill
the internet with my bad english instead of using a spellchecker,
perhaps i'll make you think that you can't read english but it wont be
the truth, will it?.

I hope that answers some of your questions :)

OK, here's my part. I gotta repeat that Firefox is my fave. No arguments about safety and all that, it's one reason I use it, and the addons. It's just that there are sites I go to that will have colored scrollbars, 'fixed' background, music that plays when you load the page and other things that just work better in IE. Can site designers do this differently so that these things happen in Firefox? Still don't get it about the standards and rules, looks like Firefox won't go with some standards. Also, I disagree that IE is free after all, just download it. I can see why you say its not because its a part of Windows and it came with the system that you bought. Not a big argument there.

It looks like you misunderstood my reply

Those elements you describe sound like ActiveX controls and that's a microsoft technology that standard compliant browsers do not support for safety reasons. Developers could use CSS and javascript or java instead, which are not platform intipented and safer. Firefox goes with all standards. ActiveX is not a standard defined by W3C, it's just a technology that microsoft created and use. There's also a chanse that you have an old version of java on your machine or that you have disabled java and javascript in Firefox. I'd suggest to use the NoScript addon for extra safety and control over java and javascript. Real profesionals develop their web sites according to W3C specifications and then hack their code to meet IE's bugy support for them. If they just develop for IE, there's not much you can do apart from asking them to comply with the standards. After all, that's what we are fighting here for, a better web that will be standards compliand so all people will be able to use it - no matter the browser or the operating system they have.
I'm not sure i understand your last comment. You disagree that IE is not free? if that's what you wanted to say, you'd better think again. Sure you can download it for free, but you have to pay for genuine authenticated windows vista first. Sounds like "Buy a car from us and we'll give you the 4 wheels for free!", not much of an offer, isn't it?
Plus, Firefox is free both as in "free beer" and as in "freedom" (with a few limitations because of it's MPL license instead of the GNU license) You are free to see it's source code AND make changes to meet your needs if you want to. If you try to do the same for IE you have to use reverse enginering and you'll be violating it's license thus becoming a criminal.

Giants? LOL

I think your comment about overthrowing giants is silly. Any one can overthrow a giant. The taller they are, the harder they fall. We just need to try

I WANT TO KNOW SOMETHING

NICKY: You have your facts a little mixed up to start with IE is not free you pay threw your IP service and firefox is free they're money comes from donations so they need word of mouth to help in keeping it free and it is by far the safest browser out there and if you need prove go to c/net.com or reuters.com and look up the article on hacking contest on the new mac air book and see the %'s on the all browsers and you see firefox is #1 as a matter of fact I posted it a while back as for your problems with things not working right might be your not updated correctly because I've never had those troubles as not to say there not happening to you but they do have a lot of fixes for all kinds of issues and if you contact them they will help as far as giant killer there your off a little again firefox interested in keeping internet free and safe and about it's people as I see it the giant killer your talking about would be google
