Add-on Developers
Making Firefox add-ons compatible with Firefox is up to each individual add-on developer and not Mozilla. They have all known for a very long time that they would have to update their add-ons to work with Firefox 3. This is a very serious problem for Mozilla because many people will not upgrade to whatever the latest version of Firefox is because users don't want to give up their add-ons.
I don't believe that Mozilla is powerless about developers not keeping up their add-ons. It would take some serious brainstorming to come up with a solution but Mozilla has overcome bigger problems. First and foremost, Mozilla needs to get rid of all the incompatible add-ons that are listed on the add-ons site. There are add-ons listed that go as far back as Firefox 1.5
It is a huge honor to have an add-on listed on the add-ons site and an even bigger honor to have an add-on listed in the public section of the add-ons site so developers need to be more responsible.
I'm a contributor to the Page Zoom Buttons extension and I can tell you first hand that it's a great feeling to see that people are installing and using Page Zoom Buttons so while developers provide their add-ons for free, there is a definite pay off.
It's no secret that add-ons are the backbone of Firefox's success so I'd really like to see Mozilla take on this issue head on.
